What Is Creativity?

It appears this post has been making the rounds on the Interwebs.  We’ve gotten about 500 hits in the last couple hours – which is for us… well… a whole lot.  Feel free to drop us a note here and let us know what you think.  (FYI – the video was done without a script, though this was my second attempt to do it.  And I used all Mac default software to produce it.  For a higher quality video click through to YouTube and select Watch In High Quality on the right side above the Views count.)

I was asked to create a video answer to this question for Imagine Alexandria.  I figure since I spend almost all day every day flapping my lips about stuff I’d do something a little different.

This was my answer:

Yeah, it’s a bit hard to read, and there was a shadow over the top quarter of the white board… but that’s what I get for doing a spur of the moment unscripted piece.

How better to show what creativity is than to attempt to show it on the fly?

Creativity is the yearning to express your thoughts
    Just a personal opinion.

  2. Tate Linden says:

    I like it.
Sadly I know quite a few people (myself included on occasion) that yearn to express what they think are their thoughts, but are in fact yearning to express other people’s thoughts that they’ve absconded with…

creativity is… the elimination of options. (from MGTaylor)

  4. judith says:

creativity is bringing ideas together in new relationships
    (amongst other things!)

Yes! Creativity is freedom. I find it is much easier to be creative than to define it. And way easier to be creative than to explain how to be creative. Love this video.

Great little vid! It drives home the point that without creativity in this world, our fundamentals would have never existed. Innovation will only exist with creativity.
    Cheers!

  7. Another Stacey comment but I’ll try to distinguish my brand of Stacey…
Thanks for throwing that video out there to those of us drying up in our cubicles.
    It Is Freedom.
    it is No-Fear.
    it requires love.
loving with no-fear. yes. that seems YES!
gotta love myself [and even all the cubicle execs] to deliver real creativity.

  8. Tate Linden says:

Interesting… I hadn’t looked at it that way. I usually see it as the creation of options. Endless…

  9. Tate Linden says:

I think you’re right, Judith. Often being creative is just recycling two previously unrelated ideas and making them work together for a new purpose.

  10. Tate Linden says:

    Thanks Babbsela.
The whole reason I did the video this way is that I felt odd trying to script a response to the question “what is creativity?”…
    Glad folks are enjoying it.

Stacy #1 – certainly in the USA creativity is a large part of who we are today. It’s both the supporter of most industries (advertising) and a key component of our system of government…

  12. Tate Linden says:

Stacey #2 – I rarely think about it that way, but you’re right. If you don’t love who you are it’s pretty damn hard to be creative. Thanks for adding to the dialogue.

  13. Dan Morris says:

    Creativity is…asking the question.

  14. chris says:

    Creativity is infinite

  15. chad says:

Creativity is simply about connecting dots. The challenge is finding the right dots to connect. Anyone can be creative. They just need to collect more dots than the other guy.
