Apparently so.
Business naming firm Dynamo [site down at time of post] stands to earn this much for the sale of the domain name Wiki.com - a registrar of wiki sites. We at Stokefire are amazed at the value placed on the domain by John Gotts. We think there's a bit of a disconnect here. When people are trying to build websites they don't go to websites.com. When people want to buy pizza they don't go to pizza.com. And when was the last time you went to
DoesAnyoneWantToPayMyMortageForMe.com? Generic web domains do not a fortune make. The only revenue we know of comes from campers who just use the site to generate a trickle of cash by getting Google or Yahoo to run advertisements.
We think that this is more an effort to get press for Gotts and Dynamo. Just take a look at how many stories there are on this. $60,000 (at $10K per month) isn't a lot of money to spend on an advertising campaign that builds to a big announcement in six months. We're betting that the deal falls through. So... as far as buzz generation goes this is pretty good. But a wise investment for a website? Not so much. And you there... thinking about buying genericwebsitename.com... just knock it off. Gotts won't buy it and you'll be out $9.95. This type of stunt only works once (if at all.) It's an excellent example of marketing. It's a pretty crappy example of brand building. Tate Linden Principal Consultant Stokefire Consulting Group 703-778-9925 |
