Thingnamer Banner

April 21, 2006 | Tate Linden

Aren't logo-wear ball caps great? You get to stick your logo on your head and walk proudly around the town getting some very cheap exposure to your brand. I've always proudly worn the caps of my favorite ball clubs and my university (UCLA), and I'd much rather help establish my company's brand than someone with as much money as either of the aforementioned organizations. We just bought some nice bright orange caps with or logo on 'em and they look great. I was thinking that this was a great way for me to get in a little exposure over the weekends (or when I'm feeling like I gotta keep it real at work) for the brand, but had a slight miscalculation...

I wore my cap to the local shopping mall, and when you factor in my height (a hair under 6'), the way I wear my hat (pushed a bit back on my head - the brim forward and pointing a bit upward) and the fact that most of the people I see are a few inches shorter than me, I realized that my brand message was getting blocked from view. I'm sure someone better at geometry than I am could figure out exactly how tall someone needs to be to see my name and logo, but the point is that my plan for world domination via ball-cap has been thwarted for the time being.

I did see quite a few people that were shorter than me glancing at my cap as I passed them - I guess that the text is visible from an angle - so there is some good in this. I am not, however, willing to wear my hat gangsta style (to the side or back) unless I'm stuck at a ballgame and the angle of the sun in combination with my tired arms makes me just twist the lid so I can protect my eyes/neck etc.

I did figure out rather early on that when I kneel down to tie my shoes or look my loving wife in the eyes that the logo is visible, so I've been doing a bit more of that than usual.

I will continue to wear my hat even though it will force a change of habit for me. You'll recognize me in public as the guy in the orange cap perpetually looking for lost change on the ground... near large groups of people.

(Really, hats are great and clients are always begging for them. I'd never thought about how personal style could reduce the impact of the advertising space. Guess there's always something new to learn.)

Is this Tate Linden from Awaken at UCLA? I was randomly looking up a few old Awaken friends and I'm wondering whether I've found the right Tate. Well, if I have, email back and say "hi"!
